Synopsis
Deva is the story of a sharp and aggressive police officer who loses his memory after a mysterious accident. As he begins to piece his life back together, he’s assigned to solve the murder of his own colleague — a case that slowly reveals hidden conspiracies within the police department and disturbing truths about his own past.
The film is inspired by the Malayalam thriller Mumbai Police, but it adds its own twists and a slightly different climax. The idea of a man investigating himself, without realizing it, is fascinating — and Deva builds a tense atmosphere around that.
Performances
Shahid Kapoor delivers a powerful performance. He captures both the intensity of a cop and the vulnerability of a man who’s lost his identity. His expressions, body language, and emotional control hold the film together even when the writing falters.

Pooja Hegde looks convincing in her role, though her character doesn’t get much screen time or depth. Pavail Gulati and other supporting actors do justice to their parts, but the story keeps its full focus on Shahid’s character.
Technical Aspects
The cinematography is slick and moody — the film often uses shadows, dim lights, and reflective cityscapes to show Deva’s mental state. The editing is sharp in the first half but slows down later, especially in scenes that over-explain the mystery.
The background score by Jakes Bejoy adds tension and style. Songs like Bhasad Macha and Marji Cha Maalik work well within the story and enhance the film’s urban vibe.
What Works
-
Shahid Kapoor’s intense and layered performance.
-
A strong, suspenseful setup with emotional depth.
-
Stylish visuals and a modern cinematic tone.
-
A few clever twists that keep you engaged.
What Doesn’t Work
-
The pacing drops in the second half, weakening the suspense.
-
The climax feels forced and doesn’t hit as hard as expected.
-
The female lead and side characters are underwritten.
-
Some parts feel stretched or confusing, especially toward the end.
Overall Verdict
Deva is a stylish but uneven thriller. It has the ambition, mood, and a magnetic lead performance — but the storytelling sometimes loses focus. Shahid Kapoor shines, and his performance alone makes it worth watching, even if the plot doesn’t always keep up with his energy.
